The method

What is Behavioural Design?

Behavioural Design is the discipline of designing contexts that make the right choice the easy choice.

It's not about tricks. It starts with a deep understanding of why people do what they do — and why they keep doing what they'd rather stop. Once you see the invisible forces behind behaviour, you can design a context that genuinely moves people.

1
Discover what truly motivates people Understand the behaviour of the people you want to influence. Why do they do what they do, and what holds them back?
2
Design the choice, not the message Use proven behavioural principles to make the desired choice easier, more attractive, or more logical.
3
Test, learn and grow your impact Measure the effect, sharpen based on what you learn, and scale what works.

Why do people do what they do?

SUE Influence Framework
Pains What isn't working right now? Which frustrations, struggles, or setbacks create a genuine desire to change?
Gains What progress does the desired behaviour deliver? How does it help people achieve what truly matters to them?
Anxieties What stops people from taking the step? Doubts, uncertainties, and barriers that feel bigger than the benefits.
Comforts What's so comfortable about the status quo that people would rather not change? Familiarity is often the strongest force holding people back.

Does this work for your challenge?

We've tackled hundreds of influence challenges across every sector. Choose your audience and see what Behavioural Design + AI can do.

Getting consumers moving

The fastest route to conversion runs through your customer's brain.

A/B testing button colours misses the point. Understand the psychological barrier blocking the purchase, and you can design customer journeys that genuinely convert.

Behavioural Design
  • Recognise purchase barriers at every touchpoint
  • Design choice architecture that drives conversion
  • Build loyalty from behavioural patterns
Enhanced with AI
  • AI identifies friction in your customer journey
  • AI generates nudge variants per touchpoint
  • AI tests with synthetic users before you go live

“How can we entice our customers to think about their energy challenges and arrange this through KBC?”

Getting voters moving

When 72% of voters only decide in the final week, how do you influence that one decision?

The problem is never motivation — it's the moment. Understand how voting behaviour really works, and you can design campaigns that get people to the ballot box.

Behavioural Design
  • Understand voting behaviour with the Influence Framework
  • Design social commitment strategies
  • Remove barriers to action
Enhanced with AI
  • AI analyses sentiment per target group
  • AI generates messages per voter segment
  • AI simulates campaign impact in advance

“How can we ensure that as many people as possible turn out to vote on the day of the European elections, regardless of their political preference?”

Getting donors moving

Between ‘this moves me’ and ‘I'll donate now’ lies a gap. That gap can be designed away.

More emotion won't close it. Understand the psychological barriers holding donors back, and you can design giving experiences that actually convert.

Behavioural Design
  • Identify donation barriers
  • Design interventions that make giving easy
  • Build commitment ladders for repeat donations
Enhanced with AI
  • AI personalises donation proposals
  • AI tests messages with synthetic donors
  • AI optimises the donation journey per segment

“How do we convince high-net-worth individuals to give structurally to a problem that seems unsolvable?”

Getting employees moving

What works in Australia clashes in Brazil. How do you design a culture that lands everywhere?

Engagement surveys change nothing. Understand how habits and context drive behaviour, and you can design workplaces where people genuinely want to perform.

Behavioural Design
  • Uncover behavioural drivers within teams
  • Design leadership moments that shape culture
  • Embed new behaviour in daily routines
Enhanced with AI
  • AI recognises patterns in team dynamics
  • AI personalises learning interventions per team
  • AI monitors behaviour change over time

“How do we design a shared leadership culture in an organisation that is scaling at breakneck speed across 4 continents?”

Getting professionals moving

A doctor has 12 minutes per patient. In those 12 minutes your innovation must land.

Doctors, consultants, specialists — they don't decide at conferences or in meetings. They decide in the moment. Understand that moment, and you win.

Behavioural Design
  • Map the decision moments of professionals
  • Design interventions that fit the workflow
  • Build adoption pathways from Jobs to be Done
Enhanced with AI
  • AI analyses adoption patterns in your data
  • AI generates touchpoints per professional profile
  • AI simulates adoption scenarios in advance

“How can we convince diabetes doctors, nurses, and health insurers that our new subscription model is far better for patient, clinician, and payer?”

Medtronic diabetes platform
Getting talent moving

Top talent doesn't choose a company. They choose a mission they want to be part of.

The best people don't choose the best deal. They choose the story they want to belong to. Understand that, and you can design recruitment that attracts exactly the right people.

Behavioural Design
  • Uncover the real motivations of talent
  • Design application processes as a selection experience
  • Build employer branding from behavioural insight
Enhanced with AI
  • AI segments talent on motivation, not CV
  • AI personalises the candidate journey
  • AI tests employer brand messages in advance

“How do we attract the brightest young engineers from Saudi Arabia to choose us over a trendy tech start-up?”

Aramco recruitment
Getting stakeholders moving

Everyone supports nature policy. Until it touches their back garden or their wallet.

Citizens, farmers, policymakers — they don't resist change. They resist loss. Understand that, and you can turn resistance into genuine engagement.

Behavioural Design
  • Understand resistance patterns per stakeholder group
  • Design framing that shifts perception
  • Build coalition strategies from shared interest
Enhanced with AI
  • AI analyses sentiment per stakeholder group
  • AI generates frames per target audience
  • AI simulates support scenarios

“How do we get farmers, citizens, and policymakers aligned behind ambitious nature policy?”

Nature and environment policy
Getting citizens moving

Good policy changes the rules. Smart policy changes the context.

Awareness campaigns don't work. Fines work even less. Understand how context drives behaviour, and you can design policies people actually follow.

Behavioural Design
  • Uncover behavioural barriers in policy contexts
  • Design nudges and choice architecture
  • Test interventions before implementation
Enhanced with AI
  • AI analyses compliance patterns
  • AI generates nudge variants per context
  • AI simulates policy impact on behaviour

About SUE

Meet the founders of SUE

Astrid Groenewegen and Tom de Bruyne believe the world can be shaped. Not naïvely, but with stubborn optimism. We call it Knalldrang. Over 15 years, they’ve helped more than 200 organisations worldwide with the SUE method. And they know one thing for certain: behaviour can be designed, and the power of positive influence can be learned. Astrid wrote the bestseller ‘The Art of Designing Behaviour’ and ‘De Gelukscode’. Tom wrote ‘Gamechangers’, the definitive book on system interventions. Together they built an Academy and Consultancy for people who refuse to wait for change — people who want to use knowledge of human behaviour, combined with AI, to create real breakthroughs. They’re backed by a brilliant team of equally passionate SUE people.
